Hampstead Heath Extension – 13th June 2004
Whalers – 248-8 off 35 Overs, Mighty Wanderers – 163 all out off 34.1
Whalers win by 85 runs
As Whalers departed for their first trip to North London this season and with a quick result needed in order to get back for the footy, the skipper called for a 12:30 meet at the pub. Unsurprisingly as 12:30 approached, Whalers were spread far and wide with Piers getting stuck in at the bar and Dan trying to hike his way in from the wrong side of the Northern line.
The match showed its true colours with the skippers agreeing to bowl at least eight bowlers each and with Ollie winning the toss, Whalers set about seeing if they could continue their tradition of centuries against the Mighty Wanderers. In short, this should have been achieved but for the ability of most of us to surrender our wicket when faced with a full toss to leg stump. Notable scores were Stuart (62), Jeff (33), Piers (33) and Ed with (46*) and the rest of us should have added a lot more to a total of 248. Special mention to Piers and Ed who added a Whalers record eighth wicket partnership of 86 before Piers tried to hit the straight one over cow corner.
After a quick turnaround, Mighty Wanderers came out to bat and the first four batsmen disappeared in quick fashion due to a combination of pace, accuracy and full tosses from the opening bowlers. This then brought out their big hitters and for a while a game was almost on. With Mighty Wanderers fifth wicket partnership adding over a hundred there was always a chance. However, Whalers showed their bowling depth with eighth choice bowler, Dan Hall returning figure of 3 for 27 off 5 overs and taking the key wicket. The remainder of the innings crumbled away to leave the Wanderers needing around a 100 off the last over. Their skipper was duly bowled first ball to end the game and all departed in quick fashion to watch the French humiliate us in the closing minutes of the football.
Special mention must go to the girls at long on who arrived to play badminton in their bikinis and to their chumps of boyfriend who gave hope to all men that there is a girl out there for us all!
