Gentleman’s Relish A CC vs Whalers

The Griffin, Dulwich; 16th July 2005

Whalers 195 all out; Gentleman’s Relish 72 all out; Whalers win by 123 runs

On one of the best summer days possible for a game of cricket, I find myself at the wrong ground. After making a frantic call to Andy Nelson(from the grounds man hut and gate crushing Ad’s wedding party), who then gets Oli’s number from Al. Luckily I find myself not too far from the correct ground. I meet up with Oli, who also happens to be late. After arriving at the correct ground, I find we are batting first (what a relief). I see Phil and Paul making a very impressive start. Paul especially looking in very good form as he has done so all season. The first wicket falls for about 50, with Paul recieving a very good Yorker. In comes a new face to whalers, and is out pretty much straight away to a very good catch at midwicket. This brings in another new face. Phil then is run out after deciding to take on a single to over throws even though both batsmen had over run almost 2 pitch lengths. In comes the late arriving skip, who after a few very good deliveries from one of the youngest player we have faced all seasons settles down quite nicely, and Whalers begin to form a partnership, the 4 wicket falls on about 90. This brings to the crease Geoff, who along with Oli form a very handy partnership for about 50, both then are out quickly, Oli miss timing a cover drive is caught and Geoff given out LBW, (Never said poor Geoff, mind you the umpiring decisions were up and down all game, more down then up). We then have a quick flurry of runs from Khalil, Dan, Andy, and James. Khalil hitting a quick impressive 20. We are finally out for 195 on a good batting track.

The oppo’s both opening batsmen form a slow start with Khalil and James opening the bowling, they keep things nice and tight. Khalil takes the first wicket to high lofted on drive and the skip takes a catch after juggling the ball from two hands to one, much to Khalil’s relief. James then takes a very impressive wicket by bowling out batsmen 3. The oppo’s 4 batsman looks pretty handy and hits James around for a few boundaries. Khalil takes his 2nd wicket of the day, before both bowlers are taken off and replaced by Dan and Andy. Dan as always is fast and straight, especially terrorising the youngest player who nicely gives catching practice.(Although the umpire doesn’t thinks so and calls a few silly wide’s and the skip having a few quite words). This leaves the oppo is some trouble at 40 for 4. There is a quick flurry of runs from the 4th batsman and is timing and hitting the ball very well and begins to look dangerous. After the drinks break Andy quickly removes the danger man after having some rough treatment from him earlier (a much satisfying wicket). The oppo are then quickly bowled over with Dan and Geoff quickly polishing of the tail enders, Geoff especially taking the last two wickets in two balls, with the oppo all out for 72.

A very impressive victory, and a good all round performance.

Man of the match: Khalil Ahmed- good all round cricket, after having been demoted behind Dan in the batting order
Champagne moment: Khalil Ahmed, skipping down wicket, lofting opening bowler to an impressive 4.
Muppet: Run out of Phil after having run two lengths of pitch and then deciding to take on the second run.

Wickets Table: 1112
