Strollers CC vs Whalers

Chiswick Civil Service Ground – 15th May 2005
Strollers 249 all out, Whalers 89 all out. Strollers win by 160 runs

We convened for our second game of the season against the Strollers at the Chiswick Civil Service Ground on a stunning sunny day. In the absence of Oli and Paul, who I am delighted to say has started the next generation of Whalers, Ads was at the helm for one of the toughest fixtures of the season.

In true Whalers style he promptly lost the toss and was left to field on a hot day, with a true wicket and a quick outfield. Osgood and Khalil opened up the bowling and were punished on the short boundary as the openers scored at a brisk pace. With Piers coming on a wicket finally came with a good catch from Khalil in the gully. Drinks came after 19 overs with the score looking rather ominous at 100 for 1. To add to our woes Stuart had to disappear off to hospital; to have his injured thumb looked at. After the short break Geoff was offering some good pace and probing stuff but not getting any luck until he finally knocked over their number 3. Ed offered some variation and secured a fantastic run out off his own bowling, picking up the ball and securing a direct hit with his throw. Another wicket followed from Piers. However, their number 5 came in and knocked off 50 to set a challenging 249 all out. It was going to be a tall order with only 10 to bat.

The batting order was difficult for the new skipper, so much so that he put himself in at 3. Oz and Geoff opened with Geoff falling early for 4, Ads followed for 1, Oz for 10, Ed for 9. Piers steadied the ship for a while with a battling 16. The bowling was nippy and accurate not allowing many deliveries to be dispatched. The new boys Tom and Gregg fell for ducks. Leaving Osgood and Khalil to come in and add some respectability to the score leaving us all out for 89.

A lot of improvement will be needed before we face the Strollers again later in the season and seek that elusive first win.

Man of the match: Piers 16 with the bat and 2 for 33 off 8
Champagne moment: Eds runout
Muppet: Osgood kicking the ball over the boundary for 4
