The Whalers’ chosen Charity – Raising Money for the Underprivileged in Sri Lanka

Between 31st March and 16th April 2006, the Whalers undertook their biggest venture yet – a tour of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is famous for being a beautiful and highly cultural island, but is unfortunately now perhaps more famous for bearing the brunt of the dreadful tsunami of 26th Decemeber 2005.

Sri Lanka is a poor country, but now more than ever is desperately in need of aid to recover from the impact of the tsunami, and also the recent textiles trade war which has seen the loss of 20,000 jobs and decimated local industry.

The Whalers have therefore decided to raise money for Sri Lanka for the following registered charity:

http://www.srilankadirect.org/

Thanks to the generous support of friends and family, we have been able to raise in excess of £14k to enable us to buy a selection of the following (from Sri Lanka Direct charity):

---------------------------------------------------------

HAND OVER KIT TO SCHOOLS

School bags (puma rucksack type) :  £2.70 each

School uniforms (we buy the cotton and volunteers do the stitching, etc) : £1 each girl or boy

Shoes :  £4.50 each

Socks : 25 pence a pair

Collection and transport of goods to the school : £1.50  approx per child kit.

Total for above would work out at around £9.95 per child. So to provide for 100 kids would be £995 and so on.

It is possible to vary the kit above and numbers of kids to be helped to align with your requirements/desires

FISHING BOAT

We construct and deliver fishing boats (or sea canoes) and hand them over to fishing families. We have already handed over 26 boats. The boats include a name selected by the sponsor and we take photos and film of the boat and the handover for our sponsors.

These are £300 each.

Photos of previous boats can be found at my web site – www.srilankadirect.org

GARMENT PROJECT

In addition to the tsunami, Sri Lanka lost 20,000 jobs and 26 factories closed due to the recent China garment trade war.

We are doing our bit to help by setting up a community of 10 ladies to become self employed in garment manufacture. We provide them with professional training plus a sewing machine plus start up kit. Cost per lady is £280.

Some of the items purchases were handed over by the Whalers to local Sri Lankans during our tour.

We’re still trying to raise money for this worthy cause – so all visitors to this site – please consider this charity for a donation – anything you could give would be greatly appreciated.

If you would like your money to be put towards a specific initiative, please inform Adam Hanmer.

We will use the following account as our pot, so please arrange to have any donations sent here:

You can send money direct to the charity at the above website, but doing it this way enables us to co-ordinate GIFT AID, thereby reclaiming the tax on the donations and allowing us to provide even more funds for this worthy cause.
