Won by 37 runs.
In the first weekend fixture of the season the Whalers scored a fine victory in a clash against Salix C.C. The team ventured down to classy Dulwich for the game, but unfortunately no spare cash had been spent on the pitch, which was patchy to say the least. The toss was won by skipper Al Dickenson, indeed the coin probably bounced more than some deliveries, and with rain in the air, he elected to use the worst of the conditions to have a bat.
A mixture of accurate bowling and variable bounce soon had the team in trouble as they slid to a potentially terminal 53-7. Only Andy Nelson, sporting his England replica shirt managed double figures in the top order. The side was to be rescued by an eighth wicket stand of 57 by Dave Humphreys (41) and Dan Osgood (28*) who contributed to the final total of 133. The innings was notable for the vast improvement in running between the wickets, the only blemish being Paul Mildon being given out to a direct hit for the final wicket as Dan tried to protect his average.
Salix started solidly but slowly as they tried to fend off the fiery opening partnership of Paul Osbourn and Paul Mildon. The breakthrough came with the introduction of Ian Gibbins and the other Salix opener finally fell to the penultimate ball of Mildon's spell leaving him with outstanding figures of 7-2-5-1. The Whalers on top - the middle order fell away with Adam Hanmer, Dan Osgood, and Will Vanderpump all taking wickets by using the best method of attack - bowling at the stumps. It was impressive fielding performance all round with the batting side always under pressure and tidy catches being snaffled by 'keeper Dave Humphreys (who put in another good display behind the stumps), Al Dickenson, Adrian Cave and Ollie Bayne.
The game was played in good spirit throughout, which continued in the bar afterwards, concluding at 11pm somewhere in the streets of Dulwich with an upside down A-Z disputing the fastest route back to Clapham.
