Mordern Corinthians CC vs
Whalers CC, 17 June 2007
Mordern won by 4 wickets
After
3 disappointing losses it was time to get back to winning ways, which was going
to be a tough ask against Morden Corinthians whom we have never beaten. We
turned up at
Stu and Dario stepped out to the usual lively
accurate bowling of Morden's openers, with a few overs
bowled Dario had gone for a quack and Al had followed soon after without
troubling the scorers. Mildon followed soon after for
7 leaving us in somewhat disarray at 22 for 3. Khalil
came in and steadied the ship with a useful 18 before perishing to their number
1 strike bowler who bowled a tidy 8 overs straight
through and ending with 4 wickets to his name. Stu
followed soon after with a useful 24. Someone had to get a real score for us to
get to any sort of total to defend, cometh the hour cometh the Whaler on debut.
Lefty Lawrence batting at 6 struck a majestic 55, like a true Whaler, mixing it
up with some sumptuous off drives, a good bit of playing and missing and the
odd heave ho. Phil or should I say G. Boycott (5) did a great job of keeping
the partnership going and defending at the other end. This partnership helped
us get to 168 with a few runs here and there for the rest of the tail, notably
21 from Neil, including a rather large 6. Ads wicket (5) batting at 10 was
celebrated by the bowler as if he had bowled the great B C Lara, if we had been
playing football it would have been a yellow card for over celebrating! In
addition to this there was an excellent comedy moment close to the end with
Dario not having troubled the scorers found himself
umpiring at the other end to his duck with unknown to him the invisible crease.
Dario no balled a legitimate ball, which Ed had decided to slog down Mid On's throat. After much confusion and laughter from the
pavilion it was declared a dead ball and we added a few more vital runs before
Neil was out in the 35th over (we were playing 40 for the record).
So we had a total but it was going to have to be something special to beat
Morden from here. Khalil and Paul started well
opening the bowling with Paul bowling particularly well, getting 3 wickets for
only 27 runs off his 8 overs on the bounce. With Khalil striking himself and taking an excellent catch at
point, wickets were falling with Ed chipping in with a wicket and Neil swinging
the ball nicely but not getting any joy. With a couple of tough chances
slipping by we got to drinks with 5 wickets down, 100 odd on the board and 22 overs bowled. We were still in the hunt but we would have
to bowl them out. With Ads getting the 6th wicket it was game on. However, the
left arm opening bowler came in and decided he was going to have a bit of a
heave. We were running out of runs to play with and with some rather fortuitous
big hitting he saw them home. If a few tough chances had been taken and we had
batted out our 40 overs it may have been a different
story - a sadly familiar story this season.
Match stats:
Whalers 168 all out
Mordern Corinthians 169 for 6
Man of the match:
Champagne moment: Neil's beefy 6 well over cow
corner.
Muppet
moment: After launching his 6 Neil tried it again next ball
and he lost his grip and the bat flew to backward point - further than the
ball!
For the statistician's out there, a single was run…
