Whalers CC lost by 29 runs
Even after
spending the majority of these two hours with intense fielding drills we did
not reflect this on the field. Lucas and
Osgood (0-23) provided some brilliant swing bowling, especially Lucas with figures
of 7 overs, no wickets for 10 runs and, although the
batsmen also played and missed on a plethora of occasions, we could not find
the breakthrough.
Kay (0-18)
also bowled tightly without luck and only a run out started the fall of wickets
when Blackheath were on 40. Strang (2-32), bowling his leggies,
then snaffled a sharp caught and bowled and then another wicket to start a mini
collapse. Al then made a great tactical
decision by dropping a catch but then throwing to the bowlers end to run the
batsman out anyway.
Another run
out was well taken, however, Deepesh played a sublime
innings, finished with 48 no including a well timed 6 over the hard working Khalil’s head.
Blackheath
ended up on 154 for 5 after their 35 overs, a
gettable total.
However, as
the sun started to drop in the sky so did our top order. Treadaway didn’t
trouble the scorers with a 3rd ball duck and then the going was
difficult for Dickenson and Khalil as young gun, left
arm around the wicket Aman (4 for 14) bowled as
tightly as a frogs blurter. Dickenson
(5) was run out, as Khalil (10) made a fantastic
impersonation of a statue at the bowlers end. Then he and Kirkness
(10) fell in consecutive overs.
Bring on
the new boys, Milanovic (19) and Strang
(44), who made solid headway, until Milanovic slashed
outside offstump to be caught behind. Strang then fell
when bowled by the returning Aman He then bowled
Osgood (0) in the same over. The sun was
now teasing the horizon which was the beginning of the end with only a short
resistance mounted by Lucas (8) and Kay (6 no) until they had to swing the
willow and Lucas was caught. The Whalers all out for 125.
This was
the “one that got away” but we look forward to the chance to beat the unbeatables, Mordern Corinthians,
next weekend.
