Whalers win by 63 runs
I am pleased to report a comfortable win for the
unbeaten Whalers on Saturday. Batting first we were in trouble early on after a typical Whalers top order collapse left us reeling
at 43/5. Responsible batting from Pip (38) in partnership with the lower order
who batted very sensibly on a reasonable pitch took us to 163 with notable
contributions from Ed (29), Dan (22) and Kamal with a very patient and useful
2.
Defending 163 on what was a good pitch for 40 overs
could have been a challenge but some good tight bowling and very good catching
meant that Drovers never really got into the chase. Kamal took a stunning catch
at square leg to remove their opener for a duck off Dan and wickets continued
to fall at regular intervals (the first 3 being caught square leg). Khalil
ended up with 4/10 and Dan 2/18. Rob and Ed Kirkness came on first change and
though more expensive than the opening bowlers kept control until spin was
introduced to clean up the tail who were hitting out. Pip finishing with 3/7
from just 10 balls. A good team performance to fight back
from a dodgy start; continuing the Whalers tradition of scoring the bulk of our
runs with our last 5 wickets.
Whalers: 163 a.o. (40/40 overs)
Drovers: 100 a.o. (21.4/40 overs)
Man of the match: Pip Very important 38 at the top
of the order
Champagne moment: Carbon Kamal Catch, excellent low down
catch at square leg to dismiss opener for a duck
Muppet moment: Khalil’s
first ball which didn’t make it to the other end of the wicket, eventually
called a wide though probably should have been dead ball.
