Whalers lose by runs
After some
fixture and date based confusion during the week, it was a pleasant surprise
when 11 Whalers turned up at Teddington for
a re-arranged fixture against Charing Cross Medics.
Matt was vice-captain for the day and duly lost the toss and on a hot afternoon
we were asked to run around the huge outfield. This wasn’t entirely a bad thing
as he had 8 recognised bowlers to employ.
Khalil and
Paul opened the bowling and kept things very tight and were unlucky not to take
a wicket, one edge from Khalil’s bowling flying
between keeper and slip. Matt and Neeraj (on his
Whalers debut) were the next bowlers to be thrown the ball and both took a
wicket in their first overs. Matt followed up with another one and at drinks
the opposition had been limited to 65-3. Dan in his new role of batting all-rounder carried
on the good work after drinks and exploited the uneven bounce in the pitch to
take a couple of wickets. In amongst the falling wickets the Medics Number
5 batsmen Wahid had stuck around and was now
starting to open his shoulders. He eventually fell for a good 67 off some good
bowling from Clippy who then proceeded to wrap up the tail and
finished with excellent figures of 3-15. Thanks to Wahids batting
however the Medics had posted a reasonable total of 154 off 38.3 overs.
This was
certainly a gettable total despite a little unevenness in the pitch however the
Whalers batting woes from earlier in the season returned with a vengeance. When
Al was dismissed for 4 in the 3rd over little did he think he would be the top
scorer out of the first 6 batsmen to be sent back to the pavilion. This was what indeed happened however as the
Whalers Number 2,3,4 and 7 batsmen failing to trouble the scorers and Number 5
only making 1. So with the score at a shocking 6-6 Dan joined Paul at the
crease and proceeded to restore some respectability to the total. They were
batting very nicely and had added 58 when Dan was unluckily caught in the
covers off a double bouncer. Cue a second collapse and the Whalers were all out
for 74 with Paul stranded on 32 not out. All in all a very disappointing finish
to a day that had started very promisingly.
Old foes Salix
are next to come so lets hope we get back to
winning ways.
