Whalers
190-6 (35) beat Salix 151ao (31.4) by 39 runs.
The Whalers
defeated Salix in a closely fought match in deepest darkest Harlington.
Winning the
toss and electing to bat captain Gilo got off to a
fast start opening with Dario and racing along to 43 before the Salix bowlers
established some control after both Dario and Gilo
were out in quick succession. Thereafter Kev and Oz
set about rebuilding and after the drinks break pushing on, which we did with
some success running between the wickets especially well. Kev
top scored with 59 and with lively cameos from Oz (19) and Al (23) we posted a
respectable 190-6 off the allocated 35.
A great
start from Khalil and Matt restricted Salix early on
in their reply, with Gilo running out one of their
openers for a duck. Wickets for Matt and Duckfreys
kept the pressure on, but luck was not on the Whalers side as Kev behind the stumps deflected an edge directly onto
Dario’s face at first slip and Dario had to leave the field for some ice and
rest. Fortunately the sub fielder Salix kindly lent us was on hand a few overs
later to catch his cousin out at point and Salix looked in some trouble at 65
for 4.
Thereafter
a solid partnership developed between Lumsden and Padmore; Salix kept well up with the required rate, and a
tight finish loomed. Dario could find only a large pair of undergarments to
hold the ice and it looked like his day would conclude crying into his pants. However
Gilo returned to take the crucial wicket of Lumsden clean bowled after a stand of 74, and recalled Matt
to finish the job which he did to devastating effect in a second spell of 4
wickets for no runs off 10 balls to finish with match figures of 5-12.
